Ride some of the best waves in Costa Rica at Mal Pais

Mal pais Costa RicaThe Nicoya Peninsula has a truly amazing coastline with some of the best beaches in Costa Rica. The surfing conditions along the coast are pretty awesome, with many international surfers coming here to ride the waves. Not only are the beaches on the peninsula picturesque, but the water temperature is ideal and the surf breaks here are pretty consistent, making surfing in Nicoya an absolute blast for both the novice as well as the experienced surfer.

One of the best places to surf in Nicoya has to be in Mal Pais, a small fishing village that sits on the western coast of the peninsula. Often described as being one of the most awesome surf sites in Costa Rica, Mal Pais is a surfer paradise with strong consistent waves and good swells. And with a long beach break, riding the waves here makes for the ultimate surfer experience.

A rocky beach with intermittent sandy stretches, Mal Pais is a beautiful secluded area with lush vegetation growing along the coast. A peaceful and quiet beach with not many tourists, the waves here are prefect for anyone to enjoy. If you are not into surfing, one can also participate in a variety of water sports here including, kite surfing, sports fishing and snorkeling. For the land lover, there’s horseback riding, mountain biking, bird watching and some great coastal hiking trails to explore.

With all year round great weather, Mal Pais is slowly becoming a top tourist hotspot. Many luxury resorts are now being set up here, and with plenty of affordable accommodations, bars and restaurants in the area, many people are now visiting this tranquil surf beach.

Just a few miles north of Mal Pais is the surfer town of Santa Teresa. A quiet coastal village, this beach is now one of the trendiest places to surf in the country. With bigger and more hollow waves, one can catch some excellent surfing opportunities when the tide is low and the waves tend to come on quicker.

Slowly developing into a small village, many shops, cabinas, and hotels are now being set up in Santa Teresa. However, this area still has a laidback and rustic feel to it, making it a great place to experience the true surf spirit of Costa Rica.
